What do we need a network for?

It was September 2003 when I arrived in Madrid. At the time of my arrival, I was married and my son Andres was about 45 days old. Little did I know that this city would become my new home for the following 6 years, that my mother would be able to obtain a visa and visit us every year, and that I would have to learn Spanish in order to find a job in my field... among many other unknowns.

Due to my experience with refugee and anti-trafficking issues in Albania, I expected that arriving in Spain would be a significant learning experience. As a Western European country, I thought they would surely be advanced in terms of strategic planning on anti-trafficking, institutional networks, legal frameworks, and law enforcement. Well, guess what? I soon realized that Albania was actually much more advanced in technical terms.

It took me a year to learn the language and then I made a project proposal to one of the most important NGOs working on migration issues: to establish an Anti-Trafficking Network of NGOs and coordinate it. Fortunately, the NGO accepted my proposal and secured me a consultancy position (a job contract was never discussed because I was pregnant at the time - but that's a topic for another article). Today, the Network still operates under the same name: Red Espanola Contra la Trata de Personas. Since then, I have realized the power of a network when there is coordination, cooperation, understanding, resources, visibility, and much more. In recent years, as the ESD and IMPACT coordinator in Europe, I have been contributing to our network of ESD professionals.

Hence, the idea to share with you today some thoughts about the importance of strengthening a network of ESD professionals and three tips on how you can do that:

Five reasons about why strengthening a network is important from a professional point of view:

1. Access to opportunities: A strong professional network can provide you with access to a wide range of opportunities such as job openings, collaborations, partnerships, and projects. By having a robust network, you increase your chances of being aware of and being considered for these opportunities. Your network can serve as a valuable source of information and referrals, helping you stay updated on industry trends and advancements.

2. Knowledge sharing and learning: Networking allows you to connect with professionals who possess diverse skills, experiences, and perspectives. Engaging with them can provide you with valuable insights, knowledge, and advice. By tapping into the expertise of your network, you can learn from others' successes and failures, gain new perspectives, and stay informed about the latest developments in your field.

3. Support and mentorship: Building a strong network of professionals can provide you with a support system that understands the challenges and nuances of your industry. Your network can offer guidance, mentorship, and emotional support during difficult times. Having access to experienced professionals who have faced similar situations can be invaluable in navigating your career path and making informed decisions.

4. Collaboration and partnerships: A strong network can facilitate collaboration and partnerships with like-minded professionals. By connecting with individuals who share similar goals or complementary skills, you can explore opportunities for joint projects, business ventures, or knowledge exchange. Collaborating with others can lead to innovative ideas, increased productivity, and expanded reach in your field.

5. Professional growth and visibility: A well-connected network can enhance your professional reputation and visibility within your industry. When you actively engage with your network, share your expertise, and contribute to discussions, you establish yourself as a knowledgeable and respected professional. This can lead to increased recognition, invitations to speak at conferences or events, and opportunities to showcase your work, ultimately boosting your professional growth and advancement.

In summary, strengthening your network of professionals in a given field can open doors to opportunities, provide valuable knowledge and support, foster collaboration, and enhance your professional reputation. It is an essential aspect of professional development and can significantly contribute to your success in your chosen field.

How can you be an active member in a network?

1. Be proactive in building and maintaining relationships: Actively seek out opportunities to connect with professionals in your field or industry. Attend conferences, seminars, and networking events to meet new people and expand your network. Additionally, make an effort to stay in touch with your existing contacts by regularly reaching out, offering assistance, or sharing relevant information. Building strong relationships requires consistent effort and genuine interest in others.

2. Provide value and be helpful: One of the best ways to strengthen your network is by offering value to others. Be willing to share your knowledge, expertise, and resources with your professional connections. This could involve providing advice, making introductions, or offering assistance when needed. By being helpful and supportive, you will build trust and credibility within your network, making it more likely that others will reciprocate and support you in return.

3. Utilize online platforms and social media: In today's digital age, online platforms and social media can be powerful tools for expanding and strengthening your professional network. Join industry-specific groups on platforms like LinkedIn, participate in relevant discussions, and share valuable content to establish yourself as a thought leader. Engage with others' posts, comment on their updates, and congratulate them on their achievements. By actively participating in online communities, you can connect with professionals from around the world and enhance your network.
